Today I am both frustrated and proud. Proud that I drove myself to class three days in a row without a single complaint or freak out. Frustrated that I know I flunked my math test. I missed two days of class and the material on the exam looked like an exotic language. It could’ve been written in cuneiform and would probably be more decipherable (okay, probably not, but you get my point). The good news? The teacher lets us correct them and then turn them back in before the next test.
Even better news: Spring Break starts Thursday afternoon (for me). So far (fingers crossed) my teachers are going easy on the assignments, so I’ll have a good eight or nine days of free time. Which means more writing.
Speaking of writing, here’s an excerpt from my current WIP draft, Essa of Tovashlai. It’s short, don’t worry.
Crouched low to the ground, Essa spotted the Cedrilaen leopard. The dark crimson rosetta patterns on its light red and brown body made it hard to distinguish when the leopard ended and when the Cedrilaen brush began, with its vibrant red leaves and thistle accompanied by dark scarlett vines and bark and branches. The distinguishing marker was the leopard’s silver eyes. They reflected the somehow-abundant sunlight as they searched for intruders. Essa paused, moved as little as possible.
“It’s safe to breathe.” A dark hand lightly squeezed her shoulder. She tried her best not to startle as she tilted her head to Barai. His silvery-black fingers stood out against her almond skin. “She’s used to our whispers by now.”
Essa made no reply. Instead, she motioned forward as the leopard moved on, its footfalls careful and precise. An animal’s stealth was always impressive. It took Essa a good seventy seasons to gain a rhythm resembling the natural, effective gait leopards possessed that the cedril didn’t.
I have a thing for unique animals, and this leopard is definitely one of my favorite creations in this world (animal-wise) so far. I want to create a whole host of unique animals, not just ones that are the same but different colored, haha. We’ll see how that goes.
How’s your Monday?
