IT WAS AWESOME. The end.
Oh, so you want an actual review? I can do that. *coughs* Ahem.
The movie starts out when Loki (the wonderful Tom Hiddleston) steals the Tessaract (which, spoiler-ish, if you don’t know what that is then you should probably watch Captain America) from a SHIELD base. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury vows to get it back since, you know, all that limitless energy and power in the hands of Tom Hiddleston is never a good idea. He assembles the Avengers team: Thor (the delicious Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner who, for a while there, isn’t exactly playing for the good guys), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Loki now has an army and seems to be working with an unknown being with immense power (you know, with said army under their control). From there, the team has to make sure Loki doesn’t take over Earth with his new army. Simple.
Except at first the Avengers don’t really get along. It’s fun to watch them beat the crap out of each other until they work out their issues. And, you know, fight the massive army and Loki and all that jazz.
Honestly, this movie outdid every expectation I had for it. The dialogue was fantastic. The whole theater burst into laughter at times, and let me tell you, it was priceless. I haven’t had that much fun at the movies in a while. Joss Whedon did a great job, really. Really, really great job.
The acting was spot on. Even Mark Ruffalo was good (and I much prefer Edward Norton as the Hulk). He turned the role into his own version of the green mean fighting machine and did it well (though, in my opinion, his acting was the weakest — but still not bad).
I can’t think of anything bad to say about this movie, other than the fact that, if you’re expecting complex plot, this is definitely not your movie. Hulk smash, things explode, there’s a lot of witty banter, and some pretty good characterization of each superhero (even Black Widow and Hawkeye, who became quick favorites for me).
But really, y’all need to see this movie. It’s great. Just great. Oh! And stay after the initial credits. There’s a nice little scene that seems promising. I’ll do a spoiler post on that another day though.
Have you seen the Avengers? What’d you think?
